USCCB on Health Care Reform

The USCCB has an informative site on Health Care Reform including its position statement on the issue. Political partisans will find something to like and dislike in the USCCB's position on health care reform. But it is every Catholic's responsibility to know the Church's teaching about civic and social issues. Check it out.

Burn Meat for Jesus!

His Disciples Cooking Ministry (link) is a group of people who get together to feed the hungry all over Houston. But instead of the standard soup, they bring their smokers and charcoal and put on rousing barbecue events for those in need. Their goal is to feed people and provide fellowship events for those who cannot afford traditional catering. All activities are run by donation.

Preferential Option for the Poor

I just read this moving post from a former Welfare kid on a Craigslist board. It gives a pretty bleak picture of working poverty but an even bleaker picture of the state of compassion for the poor in this country. This account indicts even those who offer help to the poor, if they do so out of pity or in exchange for a good feeling that requires the poor person to "show gratitude." We should give because Jesus told us to. We do not "do good" by?giving to?charity but merely do what is expected of us.

Saving up for a Laptop... well, two laptops

The visionary idea: Make a cheap rugged laptop with basic software that has connenctivity to the internet and then put them in the hands of the children of developing nations. The visionary price: $100. Can we here in the richer nations get one of those laptops too??Sure, with one catch:You?have to buy two.? And the extra one goes for free to a kid who needs it. I?don't know if you've heard about the "One Laptop Per Child" project, a visionary philanthropic collaboration between the likes of the MIT Media Lab, Google, and others.
