What is the overall goal of the
music ministry?
Our approach to music ministry is a well-rounded
one. We are called to help the community to worship through
music. Since we are part of the community it is important to
foster an atmosphere that encourages a healthy balance of
worship, fellowship, music, spiritual growth and fun among
its members.
How often do
you practice?
We usually practice once a week for 1.5 hours in the
evening during the week. We also meet 30 minutes before Mass
begins (may vary).
When does the choir sing?
Each choir sings at one Weekend Mass (different
Mass time for each choir), Christmas, Easter, and a few
special events throughout the year. See complete schedule
for more details.
Can I miss a practice, Mass or
singing event?
We understand that participants in the music
ministry have busy lives with work, family and personal
needs. We have a simple guideline that is fair and
flexible: a music ministry member should be present at
rehearsals, Masses and special events more often than they
are absent from these events.
What if I need to miss a
rehearsal or event?
We simply ask that you let us know in advance via email or
phone.
Do I need to audition?
Not really. Most likely we will meet to
determine your vocal range as well as determine what choir
would best suit your needs and the needs of the parish.
How good does my voice have to
be to sing in a choir?
You should be able to carry a tune well. If you
are an alto, tenor, or bass you should be able to learn a
harmony (a vocal part that is sung simultaneously with the
melody). Previous choir experience helps, but is not
required. You do not need to have a professionally trained
voice to sing as a choir member.
Do we have time off during the
year?
We take a break several times during the year,
especially during holidays.
Do we sing during the summer?
The choir takes a break during mid-June through
July.
How difficult is the music?
The music is presented in a way that is
challenging enough to keep the choirs interested but easy
enough to be an enjoyable experience.
What styles of music do the
choirs sing?
The styles of music we sing include Praise and
Worship, Contemporary Catholic, Gospel, Choral and Hymns.
Do I have to be able to read
music?
No. Several of our choir members read music.
Many have sung in previous choirs at one time or another.
Others sing by following along with the music and learning
by "ear".
What happens during a typical
choir practice?
We begin with vocal warm-ups, go over Sunday's
music, read the gospel or other related reading for the
upcoming Sunday, learn new music, end with closing group
prayer, and have social time.
Do you have any social events?
Yes. We have a music retreat during the year, a
social at the end of rehearsal once a month, a Christmas
luncheon as well as other events to encourage fellowship.
See our schedule of events for a complete list.
Is there an opportunity for
spiritual growth during rehearsals?
Yes. A typical rehearsal might include reading
the gospel or one of the readings for the upcoming Sunday.
We then discuss how the readings might apply to our own
life and spiritual journey. We usually close with a group
prayer. At that time, we are given an opportunity to give
thanks to God and lift up our prayer intentions as a
group.
Who is welcome to join the
choir?
Yes. Cradle Catholics, returning Catholics,
those searching for God, married, single, divorced,
widowed . . .
